Bandar, which has been in the news due to its hard-hitting trailer, relevant topic and coming together of Bobby Deol and director Anurag Kashyap, has been released today, June 5. The film is full of shocking scenes, but in between, there are also moments of laughter infused seamlessly into the narrative. One such scene involves the makers of the film taking a dig at a 1995 film and its Showman producer.
At the beginning of the film, Samar Mehra (Bobby Deol) is taken to the police station after an FIR is filed against him by Gayatri (Sapna Pabbi). Gayatri accuses Samar of rape, and also levels allegations of extortion and blackmail against him.
The cop, Deore, played excellently by Jitendra Joshi, informs Samar that he has been accused of what is known in police circles as the ‘Trimurti’ of charges. He then draws a parallel with the 1995 film of the same name, produced by Subhash Ghai, and jokes, “Subhash Ghai ki tarah tu bhi doobega.”
Interestingly, Bollywood Hungama had exclusively reported earlier about the censor cuts given to Bandar. The report also mentioned that a consent letter from celebrities was submitted for the use of their names in the film. This suggests that the makers may have taken the necessary permission before retaining the said dialogue in the final cut.
Trimurti starred Shah Rukh Khan, Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor, and was directed by the late Mukul Anand. The film was released on December 22, 1995, barely two months after SRK’s much-loved Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge hit cinemas. It opened to a historic Rs. 1.06 crore and became the first Hindi film to record a Rs. 1 crore nett opening day. However, despite the thunderous initial, the word of mouth was unfavourable and the collections began crashing soon after. As a result, Trimurti was eventually declared a flop.
