The film industry and the world at large was saddened with the passing away of the legendary actor Dharmendra in November last year. Following the news, Apne filmmaker Anil Sharma said that they won’t be able to make the film’s sequel, which was announced some time back, without him. But soon, producer Deepak Mukut said that they would like to make the sequel as a tribute to the late artiste.

In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Neerraj Pathak, who wrote Apne, spoke about the sequel and the respective statements given by Sharma and Mukut. “We had prepared a script,” he said. “But tragically, Dharam ji passed away. Hence, everyone was emotionally disturbed. We still are. At that time, Anil ji had said from this point of view that he can’t think of Apne 2 without Dharam ji. And Deepak ji also equally loved Dharam ji, so he said that Apne 2 will be like paying our last respect to him. So, both had spoken out of their love for Dharam ji.”
Sharing insights into the script of Apne 2, Pathak said, “Dharam ji had a key character in that script. He had a major role. So, we won’t be able to make a film on that script because it can’t be made without Dharam ji.”
But he indicated some hope for the sequel. “Apne 2 can be made through a new story. But I am not sure when it would be made because I feel it is too early right now. Maybe, we can think about it in 6-8 months. It won’t be right to rewrite the old script. Now, we would probably think something new,” he said.
Released in 2007, Apne was a sports cum family drama that starred Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Katrina Kaif and Shilpa Shetty in pivotal roles.
