Jyoti Deshpande, President of Jio Studios, has opened up about the massive financial and creative risks taken during the making of Dhurandhar and its follow-up Dhurandhar The Revenge. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama after the unprecedented success of the films, Deshpande reflected on the challenges faced during production and admitted that there was a point when she “staked” her entire career on the project.
The films, which went on to become major theatrical successes, were anything but conventional from the beginning. According to Jyoti Deshpande, the scale of the project unexpectedly expanded during production itself, forcing the studio to make difficult calls regarding budget and execution. Recalling the turning point, she said, “While making Dhurandhar see the film overran the budget overran after the very first schedule - we took a loose call then that if this is what so many pages have been shot and if this is what we've got in terms of footage which is beautiful but this is the length of it then looks like if we shoot the rest of the pages it will be two films but I committed to those budget enhancements without knowing where we are going to end up so that was a shot in the dark.”
She further explained how the financial responsibility ultimately rested with the studio. “I mean see a studio puts up all of the funds it's not like correct there is anyone the talent can contribute their sweat they can at best contribute their fees if it comes to that correct but the studio has to put up all the cash so in that true sense the risk resides squarely with us,” she added.
Deshpande also revealed that even a week before the film’s release, uncertainty continued to loom over the project. “Even as a runup to the film a week before the release there was a there were a series of events which brought us to a crossroad. Are we going ahead or do we need more time? At that point in time, I again had to make a decision, and I went all in and staked it all and stake my career on it,” she shared. Calling the eventual success of the franchise nothing short of extraordinary, she credited divine intervention and her late father’s blessings for the outcome. “God has been kind my late father's blessings you know absolutely such a result you can't have without something divine,” she said.
Jyoti Deshpande also spoke about the journey of building Jio Studios from the ground up since 2018 and revealed that the success of Dhurandhar was acknowledged at the larger corporate level as well. “They are incredibly proud. You know today from 2018 I set up the studio ground up. It's a baby from zero we set it up and we've reached this far,” she said, while adding that the studio and the success of Dhurandhar were featured prominently in a recent investor presentation.
With Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar The Revenge emerging as two of the biggest cinematic successes in recent years, the films have not only reshaped box office expectations but also reinforced Jio Studios’ growing dominance in the theatrical space.
