Jamie Lever recently appeared in a rapid-fire interview with Bollywood Hungama, where she spoke candidly about mimicry, comedy, insecurities, cancel culture and the challenges female comedians often face in the entertainment industry.

During the interaction, Jamie revealed that veteran singer Asha Bhosle is one celebrity she can mimic effortlessly at any time. Speaking humorously about how deeply the mimicry has become a part of her personality, she said, “Even when I laugh normally, my mother will be like, ‘Why did you laugh like Asha ji?’ I’m not trying to copy her. It’s a part of me, I guess.”
Jamie also recalled filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan’s reaction after watching one of her mimicry videos. “She called me and she said, ‘What have you done? Now my husband thinks I speak like this.’ Then the next thing she said was, ‘Please send me that video,’” Jamie shared.
Talking about the pressures of being a comedian, Jamie described performing live as one of the toughest aspects of the profession. “Standing on stage, you’re the most vulnerable in front of thousands of people. You’re open for criticism or appreciation. And there are no retakes,” she said.
The comedian also reflected on the advice she continues to receive from her father, veteran actor and comedian Johnny Lever. “To be a student and to keep learning. Even at the age of 70, he’s still learning,” Jamie said, while adding that her father often reminds her of something he learned from Paresh Rawal: “We do what we know. Do what you don’t know.”
When asked which Bollywood actor she believes has strong comic timing despite not being known primarily as a comedian, Jamie named Riteish Deshmukh. “I think he has a really good sense of humour,” she said.
The conversation also touched upon cancel culture and changing audience sensitivities. Jamie admitted that comedians today are often more cautious about what they say publicly. “Yes, I think we are nervous about what we say. I think we don’t feel free so much,” she stated.
She further agreed that dark humour is often misunderstood and spoke openly about gender bias within comedy. “Male comedians, they have more freedom than female comedians. I think the audience is more accepting of a male comic. A male comic abusing and using foul language is more acceptable,” Jamie explained.
Apart from comedy, Jamie also discussed her personal insecurities and self-acceptance journey. “I’ve battled with insecurities about my look, my appearance. I’ve really worked on it to be more accepting of myself and be comfortable in my skin,” she shared.
The actress-comedian also revealed that she enjoys reading crime thrillers, travelling solo and playing the guitar in her free time. Speaking about filmmakers she hopes to collaborate with in the future, Jamie named Zoya Akhtar, Rakhee Gulzar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rohit Shetty among her favourites.
