As Dhurandhar The Revenge becomes UK’s highest grosser, here’s the UNBELIEVABLE Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham record that still refuses to die after more than 24 years

en Bollywood News As Dhurandhar The Revenge becomes UK’s highest grosser, here’s the UNBELIEVABLE Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham record that still refuses to die after more than 24 years

Two weeks back, the highest grosser of all time – Dhurandhar The Revenge – added another feather to its cap. It became the highest-grossing Hindi film in the United Kingdom, surpassing Pathaan (2023). Many felt it might fall short of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, but when it comes to Dhurandhar, one should always expect the unexpected. In most markets, including India, a glance at the list of top 10 grossers makes it clear that films released in the last 10 years dominate the slots, with the majority belonging to the post-pandemic era. But the UK remains an exception.

Dhurandhar The Revenge UK box office success Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham long standing record

As Dhurandhar The Revenge becomes UK’s highest grosser, here’s the UNBELIEVABLE Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham record that still refuses to die after more than 24 years

In this key market, Dhoom 3 (2013) holds the sixth position, having earned £2.710 million. Next comes Salman Khan’s much loved Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), which collected £2.662 million in the European country. At number 8 is the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer My Name Is Khan (2010). It was released more than 16 years ago and even today, it is part of the coveted list. It had collected £2.626 million.

Meanwhile, a film even older than My Name Is Khan occupies the tenth slot – Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001). The multi-starrer family saga, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, earned £2.499 million in the UK, a record number for its time that remained unchallenged for years. In India and almost every other major overseas territory, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is no longer in the top 10 list, or even the top 50. Yet, in the United Kingdom, even after nearly 24 ½ years, the family saga maintains its position in the coveted top 10 list.

Several promising films, such as Ramayana, King, Love & War, etc., are scheduled for release soon. There’s a strong possibility that one of these films will enter the top 10 list, which could eventually oust Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Yet, its feat will remain one for the record books: a film holding its place in the coveted list for almost 25 years, a milestone that may or may not be replicated ever again.

When KJo opened up on K3G mania in UK

In an interview with Pinkvilla in October 2023, Karan Johar opened up about the craze for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in the UK. He said, “I went to a theatre in London called Cine World. It was situated in a locality where the bulk of the Asian community comes (to watch films). I watched Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham there. A gentleman called Andrew ran the theatre. He told me, ‘I was very keen to meet you. I wanted to know who this director is who made it to the top 3 of the UK box office after Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone (2001) and The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring (2001). You are on number 3’! He further said, ‘There are queues in the cold to see this film’.”

Karan Johar continued, “When I went inside, I saw that the audience was reacting to everything. There’s a scene when Kajol says, ‘Wapas chalo ab Rahul. Yeh na hamara desh hai, na hamare log hai’. They all stood up and clapped! I wondered, ‘If you all really want to leave, why are you all here?’!”
