When it comes to Mortal Kombat, few names evoke as much awe and fear as Shao Kahn. Towering, brutal, and unapologetically dominant, he is the quintessential video game villain. For actor and bodybuilder Martyn Ford, stepping into those menacing boots in Mortal Kombat 2 was more than just a career milestone it was a childhood dream come full circle.
“Of course I was a fan,” Ford says with a grin. “We all played the game growing up, and for me, it was always about Shao Kahn. He was the ultimate boss.” The iconic character, long revered for his brute strength and commanding presence, was no small feat to portray. But for Ford, the challenge wasn’t just about looking the part it was about understanding the psychological layers of a villain who, beneath his war cries and world-conquering ambitions, just wanted to be liked.
“A lot of it had to do with getting a balance between being the terror that Shao Kahn is and making him relatable,” Ford shares. “All he wanted was to be liked. I actually drew inspiration from my mum yelling at me growing up the anger, the intensity but also the love behind it. That was my grounding point for Shao Kahn.”
Bringing that emotional nuance to life, however, was only half the battle. The physicality of Shao Kahn required months of gruelling preparation, from mastering the character’s massive war hammer complete with a deadly spike to enduring hours of prosthetic application. “There was a lot of training involved in using the weapon properly, especially with all the prosthetics on. It got really intense. I remember one day the hammer actually slipped from my hands and smashed a light on set. That was scary!”
Ford confirms that the film leans heavily on practical action. “There’s almost no CGI,” he reveals. “Every fight sequence was shot live. We trained hard to get the movements, the stances, the impact all physically done. That was the only way to make it real.”
For fans eagerly anticipating the sequel, Ford offers a simple hope: “I just want people to appreciate the balance we’ve tried to achieve between the action and the story. A Mortal Kombat film without either wouldn’t be complete.”
