Actor Vaani Kapoor spoke about growing environmental awareness within the film industry during a conversation with Neeraj Roy, MD of Hungama Digital Media Entertainment, at the IAA Olive Crown Awards 2026, held on April 8 in Mumbai. During the interaction, Kapoor shared her perspective on how attitudes towards sustainability are gradually evolving, particularly among younger generations.

“I think we are all at a very individual level and are very aware. People are very woke these days. Now that you mentioned Gen Z, they are more cautious and aware. I must give them the credit to put their energy into the right direction and into the right things that matter to all of us,” she said.

Vaani Kapoor recalls eco-conscious practices during Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui shoot
Kapoor also reflected on her experience while filming Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, recalling how producer Pragya Kapoor encouraged sustainable practices on set. “I remember we were shooting for a Holi sequence song and because we had colour all over and we had to take a cut and for all the retakes we had to follow continuity and rub off all the colour that we already had on our skin and then redo the makeup. She was like guys we only have these many tissues. Nothing was one use plastic on our film set. Everything was sustainable,” Kapoor said.
She added that the production team made additional efforts to minimise waste during the shoot. “The people were taking extra measures and also because we were in the midst of a pandemic, it made us all the more cautious in terms of using everything very cautiously and smartly,” she noted.
“It’s about intent and small steps,” says Vaani Kapoor
Kapoor also acknowledged that large film productions often involve logistical challenges when it comes to maintaining sustainability practices because of the size of crews and scale of operations. “I don’t think it’s just about a film set. It’s the intent behind how somebody can be. A lot of wastage can happen in our industry sometimes because there’s so much happening and there’s a big crew and so many people that you can’t discipline all of them,” she said.
Emphasising individual responsibility, she added, “I think we have to take that responsibility on ourselves to just mind ourselves. We don’t have to go around preaching everybody. I think everybody in today’s day and age is very smart and capable of understanding the importance of where we are headed as a world.”
Kapoor concluded by describing sustainability as a collective effort shaped by consistent everyday choices. “It’s a reminder to ourselves more than to anybody else how we can take those simple small steps and eventually contribute in the bigger impact.”
The event also recognised excellence in sustainability-focused advertising and also saw Kapoor announced as Green Ambassador for communication.
