Actor Aamir Khan recently spoke about the emotional impact of his divorce from Reena Dutta and how it changed his life during a difficult phase. In a conversation on Duologue with Barun Das, the actor recalled how he struggled after she moved out with their children, Ira Khan and Junaid Khan.
Aamir Khan recalls emotional phase after separation
Speaking about the period following the separation, Aamir said he found it hard to cope with being alone at home for the first time after the family moved out. He shared that he had never been a regular drinker earlier. However, the emotional shock led him to start drinking that night. He added that the change in his habits was extreme for him.
“I was a teetotaller until I went through my first divorce with Reena. On the first day when she left with the kids and I was alone at home, I couldn’t handle my emotions at that time,” he said. Aamir further revealed that he continued drinking heavily for nearly one and a half years after the separation. “For the next one and a half years, I drank almost a bottle a night,” he said, describing the shift as drastic for someone who rarely consumed alcohol earlier.

This is not the first time the actor has spoken about the emotional impact of the divorce. During an earlier appearance on Koffee with Karan, he had described the separation as difficult for both families. “Reena and I were married for 16 long years,” he had said. “When we split up, it was traumatic for us and our families. We tried to deal with the situation as best as we could.”
Aamir later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. The couple announced their separation in 2021 but continue to collaborate professionally and co-parent their son, Azaad. On his 60th birthday in March 2025, the actor introduced his partner, Gauri Spratt, to the media in Mumbai. Since then, the two have been seen together at several public events.
On the professional front, Aamir was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par. He also made a cameo appearance in Happy Patel Khatarnaak Jasoos, the directorial debut of Vir Das, which was backed by his production banner.
