Producer Siddharth Roy Kapur has credited filmmaker Nagraj Popatrao Manjule for bringing authenticity and detail to the upcoming series Matka King, following the release of its trailer.

Set in 1960s Bombay, Matka King explores the rise of a betting network that grew into a widespread phenomenon. The story follows Brij Bhatti, played by Vijay Varma, a cotton trader who turns a simple format of betting into a large-scale operation, navigating a world shaped by risk, ambition and opportunity.
Speaking at the trailer launch, Roy Kapur highlighted the challenges of creating a period drama and acknowledged Manjule’s role in shaping the show’s visual and narrative authenticity. “When you're doing any period piece you have to be very specific to the time and that detailing, of course, Nagraj ji has done so beautifully along with his entire team. I think he was very clear from the start that he wanted this to feel authentic, feel real,” he said.
He added that the director’s clarity of vision extended across departments. “And I think the effort he has put in to make sure that that happens with the entire crew was wonderful. So all the credit would go to him,” Roy Kapur noted. The launch event was attended by cast members including Kritika Kamra and Sai Tamhankar, who are part of the ensemble bringing the narrative to screen.
Produced under the banners of Roy Kapur Films, Aatpat and SMR Productions, the series features a large supporting cast including Gulshan Grover and Cyrus Sahukar, among others. Matka King is set to premiere on Prime Video on April 17, with availability across India and international markets.
