As anticipation builds around Ramayana, an interesting piece of cinematic history has resurfaced, linking Ranbir Kapoor to a legacy that dates back over nine decades. The actor is set to portray Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious retelling of the epic, marking a full-circle moment for the Kapoor family.

Coinciding with Hanuman Jayanti 2026, the makers unveiled the Rama glimpse. The glimpse offers audiences the first look at Ranbir Kapoor stepping into the revered role. The film also features Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman.
What makes this casting particularly significant is its connection to the past. Back in 1933, the film Seeta, directed by Debaki Bose, brought the Ramayana to the big screen in what became a landmark moment for Indian cinema. Produced by East India Film Company, the Bengali talkie went on to achieve international recognition, earning an honorary diploma at the Venice International Film Festival in 1934 — making it the first Indian talkie to be showcased on a global platform.
In a remarkable coincidence, the role of Lord Ram in Seeta was portrayed by Prithviraj Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor’s great-grandfather. He starred opposite Durga Khote as Sita, alongside actors like Gul Hamid and Trilok Kapoor.
Nearly a century later, Ranbir Kapoor is set to reprise the same iconic role in a large-scale, big-budget adaptation, bringing a sense of continuity and nostalgia to the project. The generational connection adds an emotional layer to the film, making it more than just a cinematic retelling of the epic.
Mounted as a two-part franchise, Ramayana is slated to release its first instalment during Diwali 2026, with the second part expected to follow in Diwali 2027.
