Akshay Kumar has weighed in on the growing dependence on VFX and AI in action cinema, expressing his preference for raw, practical stunts over digitally enhanced sequences. In a recent interaction with Press Trust of India, the actor, who is known for his action sequences, opened up about how the landscape of action filmmaking has evolved over the years—and why he believes authenticity is getting lost in the process.

“There is a huge difference in the way action films are being made today. Earlier, the action would be real; now, everything is done in VFX. It’s not fun as it feels fake. I want to make a film, which is real," Akshay said, highlighting his concern over the increasing use of computer-generated effects.
Known for performing many of his own stunts, the actor emphasised his desire to return to a more grounded style of action filmmaking. “If I’m jumping, then I’m jumping for real and not using VFX, or if I’m kicking, then I’m kicking for real, not like 15 people helping me kick people. I want to make an action film without the use of VFX. I’m saying this in the era of AI, and people may think what they wish to, but I want to do an action film that is a real action film. The audience can feel how much effort is being put in, unlike the efforts taken with the help of AI or computer."
Drawing an analogy to explain his viewpoint, Akshay compared modern filmmaking techniques to digital art versus handmade creations. "There's a difference between real, hand-made and printed (digital) painting. The printed painting may look perfect, and the real painting may have some flaws. Now, it depends on you, what you want to see. I want to make a real painting."
Akshay Kumar has long been associated with high-energy action films like the Khiladi series and is widely regarded as one of Bollywood’s most physically committed actors. His comments reflect a broader conversation within the film industry about balancing technology with realism, especially at a time when visual effects and AI are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
On the work front, the actor will next be seen in Bhooth Bangla, marking his reunion with filmmaker Priyadarshan after 14 years. The film features an ensemble cast including Wamiqa Gabbi, Tabu, and Paresh Rawal, among others.
As audiences continue to embrace larger-than-life spectacles, it remains to be seen whether Akshay’s vision of stripped-down, real action will carve a space for itself in the current cinematic landscape.
