Filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli is once again pushing the boundaries of scale and visual storytelling with his upcoming film Varanasi, headlined by Mahesh Babu along with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film, currently under production, is already generating significant buzz for its ambitious set design and global reception.
After creating the iconic Mahishmati kingdom in Baahubali, Rajamouli has now built a massive, lifelike recreation of Varanasi in Hyderabad. The expansive set has been designed to replicate the city’s essence in minute detail, from its ghats and temples to palatial structures and architectural textures, giving it an immersive and authentic feel.
According to the makers, “the ghats, the temples, and the environment have been designed so meticulously to capture the essence of Varanasi that the sets look incredibly lifelike,” highlighting the effort that has gone into recreating the sacred city. The scale of the set reflects the film’s blend of mythology and action-adventure, with the production aiming to deliver a visually rich cinematic experience.
The project has also begun making an impression internationally. A first glimpse of the film was showcased at a trailer festival held at Le Grand Rex, one of Europe’s most iconic cinema screens, where it received an enthusiastic response. “From the first frame of the movie itself, the hall was filled with the sound of applause, cheers, and whistles,” the makers noted, underlining the strong early reception.
Adding to the anticipation, first looks of the lead cast, Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mandakini, have already sparked widespread conversation online. With expectations continuing to rise, Varanasi is slated for a grand theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
