Can Dhurandhar The Revenge sustain the rampage at 235 minutes? Trade calls it a “double-edged sword”

en Bollywood News Can Dhurandhar The Revenge sustain the rampage at 235 minutes? Trade calls it a “double-edged sword”

Dhurandhar’s (2015) first part was 3 hours and 34 minutes long and yet, it managed to grip viewers from start to finish. Dhurandhar The Revenge, meanwhile, goes one step further as it reportedly has a run time of 3 hours and 55 minutes. While fans are excited about it, a section of the viewers and industry are apprehensive. As an industry insider commented, “What if the pace drops in places and what if it’s not as engaging as the first part?” We asked trade experts to comment on this aspect.

Trade analyst Atul Mohan said, “It’s a double-edged sword. The sequel needs to be as engaging as the first part. Agar isme thoda unnees-bees hua, then it might prove detrimental. Thankfully, Aditya Dhar is a sensible director. He knows how to elevate the proceedings and keep the viewers captivated. We saw that in Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019) and Dhurandhar’s first part as well as in the films that he produced.”

Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director at film production and distribution firm Karmic Films, replied, “If the content is good, nobody would mind. But when the content doesn’t click, the audience will reject the film even if it's 2 hours long.”

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh disagreed, “Sangam (1964), which is one of Raj Kapoor saab’s biggest hits, was also very long. Mera Naam Joker (1970) was even longer. Though it didn't work, as intended, it became a cult classic. They made solid profits from that film. Hence, length is no deterrent.”

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, commented, “Ideally, exhibitors don’t prefer a film of more than 2 hours and 30 minutes as it restricts the number of shows. Meanwhile, Dhurandhar The Revenge is nearly 4 hours long. However, if I had to choose a 2.30-hour-long bad film and a 4-hour-long epic, I’ll take the latter any day (laughs).”

He continued, “Longer films are becoming the norm. People get a break from Reels when they watch some lengthy films. There's fun in watching long-form, community-viewing cinema. It’s like a paisa vasool experience for them. Hence, cinema is going back to its roots. It is becoming larger-than-life and theatrical. In between, shorter length and realistic films were being churned out. Many argued whether people had the patience to watch a two-hour-plus film. However, cinema is like a test match and it needs to be treated with that sensibility. Hence, I am happy that longer films are just not made but are also accepted by the public. This is happening globally. Acclaimed like F1: The Movie (2025) or the ones by Tarantino, Nolan etc are lengthy. One Battle After Another (2025), which recently won 6 Oscars, was also quite long.”

He added, “So, we exhibitors should get used to it. We may have 4 shows instead of 5, but if all 4 of them are going full, what’s the harm?”

Shariq Patel, former CEO of Zee Studios, opined, “Aditya Dhar managed to hold us despite the 3 hours and 30 minutes of run time. Also, it’s the same maker and the same story going forward. So, it shouldn’t be a problem. However, he has shot extra footage in the last 2 months to enhance the storytelling. At times, one can become a victim of one's own success. Hence, it’s a gamble.”

He gave cricket analogies to explain his point, “Imagine Sachin Tendulkar has just hit a century. Now, you’re not going to doubt him about his preparation for the next test match. You just feel, ‘Agli match mein bhi Tendulkar 100 run maarega’. Similarly, Rs. 1000 crore is par for the course now. After all, those who didn’t see the first part in cinemas and consumed it on OTT are bound to check out the sequel on the big screen. So, the momentum is there. Hence, the business from Wednesday evening to Sunday will be bumper. Then, it remains to be seen if it will continue to repeat the rampage of the first part or if it will be front-loaded. Maintaining that trajectory is going to be difficult. It’s like Sanju Samson dominating three matches consecutively with the same intensity and pattern in the last three matches of the T20 World Cup. It doesn’t happen often. Can Dhurandhar’s sequel do that is what we need to find out.”
