Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has stirred debate in the film industry with his bold prediction about the upcoming action film Dhurandhar: The Revenge. The director recently said that if the film manages to earn between ₹1,500 crore and ₹2,000 crore at the global box office, it could significantly challenge the dominance of South Indian films in the pan-India market.
Speaking in a conversation with Variety India, Varma expressed strong confidence in the sequel directed by Aditya Dhar and headlined by Ranveer Singh. “I feel Dhurandhar 2 will do better business than part one. If it creates numbers like ₹1,500–2,000 crore, all the South films will go for a toss,” he said. Varma also pointed out that the film’s approach to action could influence filmmaking styles in India. According to him, the film relies more on grounded and realistic action rather than exaggerated stunts. “You can’t have people flying in the air and kicking in the air. It’s got to be all real,” he remarked, suggesting that audiences may increasingly prefer authenticity in action sequences.
Dhurandhar: The Revenge is scheduled to release in theatres on March 19. The film was earlier expected to face a box-office clash with Yash’s Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups. However, the gangster drama has now been postponed to June 4, giving Dhurandhar: The Revenge a largely solo release window.
Varma, known for iconic films like Satya and Rakta Charitra, has often voiced strong opinions on the evolving landscape of Indian cinema. His latest comments highlight the growing competition between Bollywood and the South film industries in the race to deliver pan-India blockbusters. With massive expectations riding on it, Dhurandhar: The Revenge is already generating strong buzz, with its promotions across multiple regions receiving an enthusiastic response from audiences.
