32 years of Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and you are still remembered as the feisty Anna. How does that make you feel?
Well, obviously it gives me a lot of joy and I feel grateful for the love. But for me personally, it’s been too long. I don’t relate to that part of my life anymore. I’m in a new life in my head - same body physically (chuckles).

SRK has often singled out KHKN as his favourite film. How do you rank it?
He’s done some extraordinary work. My Name Is Khan, Swades and Don are also memorable performances.

Please walk me back on how you bagged the coveted part?
I was recommended to Kundan by Sanjeev Bhattacharya my director of Chunauti. I went did multiple auditions and got selected.

Kundan Shah once told me you were a delight to work with. What was your experience with him?
I used to argue with Kundan a lot on the set. I was very childish and immature and frankly had no film star ambitions. I thought I’ll win a Grammy: those were my ambitions as I was always a singer first. Acting happened because I looked a certain way I guess and I was natural before the camera. It was not something I envisioned for myself. Kundan and I remained friends till he passed away. I used to call him my shrink. I would visit his office and chat for hours.

How do you recall Shah Rukh and Deepak Tijori as co-stars?
Both Deepak and Shah Rukh were fab to work with. Deepak was far more easy going. Shah Rukh in those days was very different.

What do you think accounts for the film's perennial popularity?
Kismat.

Why were you subsequently unable to find the roles to do justice to you?
Well I quit acting for marriage soon after the film. I threw away opportunities because, as I said, I was not ambitious as an actor. Acting was something that just happened to me.

If you had to play Anna now, would you change anything?
Nope. I was Anna in those days. I miss my innocence and my naiveté.
