Public figures from the film and entertainment industry responded over the weekend after a metro construction pillar collapse in Mumbai’s Mulund area left one person dead and three injured, drawing renewed attention to safety practices at infrastructure sites.

Writer-comedian Varun Grover voiced strong criticism of civic conditions in a social media post, linking the incident to broader concerns about governance and urban planning. “Mumbai is the MOST corrupt city in India probably by a huge margin,” he wrote, also pointing to poor roads, planning failures, and what he described as a disregard for human life.
Actor Hrithik Roshan adopted a more measured tone while still stressing the seriousness of the accident. Calling the incident “heartbreaking and traumatic,” he expressed condolences to the victim’s family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“I commend the swift action taken by the authorities to ensure accountability, but the need for safety checks and prevention of such accidents is a priority,” Roshan wrote on social media. “Safety of the construction workers and common people is of paramount importance, and I hope strict measures are taken to ensure guidelines and protocol are in place to avoid such incidents in the future.”
The collapse occurred around 1 pm on Saturday near the Johnson & Johnson office in Mulund, when a concrete section from an under-construction Metro Line 4 pillar fell onto the road below. An autorickshaw was struck, killing driver Ramdhan Yadav and injuring three others.
The accident has attracted scrutiny after residents reportedly shared images online showing cracks in nearby pillars days earlier. Those warnings, according to local accounts, did not prompt immediate corrective action.
Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority said an inquiry committee has been formed to determine responsibility. Authorities have arrested five people connected to the project, and the contractor involved has been fined ₹5 crore.
The incident adds to ongoing public debate about safety oversight amid rapid infrastructure expansion across the city. With multiple large-scale transport projects underway, questions are likely to continue about inspection systems, contractor accountability, and on-site monitoring standards.
