Sadiaa Khateeb takes a swipe at The Kerala Story 2, says responsible filmmakers can “do better”

Raksha Bandhan actress Sadiaa Khateeb has voiced her strong objection to The Kerala Story sequel titled The Kerala Story 2 Goes Beyond after the makers released the teaser of the film. Taking to her Instagram Stories, the actress criticised the film for promoting division and questioned the intent behind such narratives.

The Kerala Story 2 Goes Beyond, a sequel to the controversial first part, once again claims to be inspired by true events and is expected to focus on religious conversion across various parts of India. Reacting to the teaser, Sadiaa said she felt deeply disturbed and disrespected by the way the film portrays certain communities. She accused the makers of using cinema as a medium to push propaganda rather than responsible storytelling. In her statement, the actress pointed out that repeatedly portraying an entire community as terrorists or villains goes beyond creative liberty. “When an entire community is repeatedly portrayed as a threat, as terrorists, as villains, it stops being storytelling and becomes dehumanisation,” she wrote. Sadiaa further took a dig at the filmmakers for selling hatred and presenting it as something normal.

Earlier, during the release of the first film, several prominent voices from the industry, including actors Naseeruddin Shah and Kamal Haasan, along with Malayalam filmmaker Jeo Baby, had criticised the film for misrepresenting facts and pushing a specific agenda. Sadiaa concluded her note by highlighting the responsibility that comes with filmmaking and said that creators with such influence can and should do better. Treating hate as art, she added, only causes long-term damage.
