Rani Mukerji recently reflected on her National Award-winning film Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway during a candid conversation at Bollywood Hungama’s Hangout, a fan meet-and-greet event held at St. Xavier’s College. Speaking about the emotional and personal journey behind the film, the actress revealed that when the script was first offered to her, she initially believed the story to be fictional.

Rani shared that the film came to her at a particularly vulnerable phase of her life, during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I actually learned a lot when the script was offered to me, and it’s interesting because I can give anecdotes from my experience with the film,” she said.

Recalling the moment she was approached for the role, Rani revealed, “Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway was offered to me during COVID. I would like to share something personal — I lost my second baby at that point in time.” She described the period as deeply isolating, adding, “There was a sense of loss, and it was a very lonely time because you couldn’t meet family or friends. Everything was mostly over the phone.”

It was during this emotionally challenging phase that director Nikkhil Advani called her with the script. Rani admitted she was taken aback by the story’s premise. “I actually questioned him. I said, ‘Nikkhil (Advani), are you mad? How can you get me a story which is so fabricated?’” she recalled.

However, Advani clarified that the story was rooted in reality. “He said, ‘No, this is the truth.’ This case was very prevalent in India in 2012, and I was ashamed of myself that despite living in India, I had no clue that something like this had happened,” Rani said.

The actress went on to reflect on how the film shattered her own assumptions about life abroad for Indian families. “We are often shown a picture where Indians living overseas seem to have a rosy life — as if everything is beautiful there,” she said. “But what we don’t realise are the struggles and challenges they face every day, living in a country where they are third- or fourth-class citizens.”

Drawing a contrast, Rani pointed out how differently Indian families experience life in their home country. “In India, we are empowered because we are first-class citizens. We know how to live our lives. We can raise our children the way we want,” she explained. “But abroad, there are so many things Indian immigrant families have to deal with. It was an eye-opener for me.”

Rani said this realisation became one of the primary reasons she chose to do the film. “This is the challenge that an Indian family and an Indian immigrant family went through,” she noted. “I’m so glad that the reason I did the film was to educate people and create awareness. And I’m very happy that you were also educated the way I was myself.”

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, inspired by true events, went on to receive widespread acclaim, with Rani’s performance earning her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
