The teaser of Dhurandhar was unveiled on Ranveer Singh’s birthday, on July 6, and got a roaring response. The trailer, too, was loved, though a few viewers were taken aback by the bloodshed. Meanwhile, Bollywood Hungama was the first one to inform readers that Dhurandhar has a run time of around 3 hours and 30 minutes, which astonished the trade, industry and also moviegoers. We spoke to experts to find out what they have to say about these aspects.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “I don’t think that should be a deterrent if the content is very interesting and absorbing. There have been lengthy films in the past, like Animal (2023). That did not really affect the film. The same goes for Pushpa 2 (2024).”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal agreed, “Animal has proved that length doesn't deter viewers. Length is an issue when the film is not doing well, and it can also affect showcasing. It becomes very difficult for multiplexes to give such films more shows because of their length. But since it's a solo release, the issue of showcasing doesn't arise here.”
Atul Mohan added, “Even before Animal's release, many wondered if such a lengthy film would find an audience. Yet, the public came in hordes. The same happened with Pushpa 2. As long as the film is engaging, duration is secondary.”
But Girish Johar, producer and eminent film business analyst, exulted, “A certain section of the audience may have apprehension about it. Long films, if made well, do not act as a deterrent. It all depends on how well it connects with the audience.”
Taran Adarsh also opened up on the comparisons of Dhurandhar and Animal, not just due to run time, but due to excessive violence, “Dhurandhar is being compared with Animal. Such comparisons are bound to happen as Ranveer and Ranbir are supposed to be contemporaries. But with Animal, Ranbir scored a super-solid day 1. It was an adult-certified film and so is Dhurandhar.”
Interestingly, Animal and Pushpa 2 were released in the first week of December and even Dhurandhar arrives in the same period.
However, Taran Adarsh and others agreed that Ranveer Singh is a fine performer. Atul Mohan remarked, “He's a very good actor. Whenever he gets a challenging role, he nails it. As we say here, woh faad ke rakh deta hai or kha jaata hai!”
He added, “He worked hard in ’83 (2021), but the timing was not correct. It got impacted by lockdown delays. He was also exceptional in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023). So, when he gets a challenging character, he comes out with flying colours, every time.”
Regarding the trailer response, Atul Mohan explained, “The trailer was shocking for many due to the torture element. Some haven't appreciated it and they have been vocal about it on social media as well. Nevertheless, the fact that your film is being discussed is also crucial. Film charcha mein honi chahiye!”
Taran Adarsh said, “A lot is riding on Ranveer Singh. The numbers really need to be huge for Dhurandhar. When you are charging a higher fee and when the film is so expensive, you need to get those numbers anyhow, that too from day 1. After all, this is not a word-of-mouth film. The word of mouth will only decide how the film will fare in the remaining days.”
Atul Mohan, in agreement, also stated, “Reviews won't matter. You may show this film to as many as people as possible and gather positive ratings from them. But what will matter is how many people genuinely turn up on the first day and how their word of mouth translates into more footfalls.”
Taran Adarsh signed off by saying, “It is important for the health of the industry as well that Dhurandhar takes a fantastic start at the ticket window. Wednesday and Thursday are going to be utmost crucial as far as the advance booking is concerned. It would give an idea as to what kind of excitement the film holds for the common man.”
