Universal Pictures India (distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery) announced the much-anticipated release of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, set to hit cinemas across India on September 12, 2025. The film continues the story of the Crawley family and their loyal staff, now navigating the social and personal upheavals of the 1930s.
Directed by Simon Curtis, the film follows the household into the glamour of the London Season, where the story unfolded at Lady Petersfield’s Ball, the highlight of the social calendar. Amidst the grandeur, Lady Mary Talbot (played by Michelle Dockery) found herself at the centre of a public scandal following her divorce—an event that, in the 1930s, threatened to unravel her social standing and bring unwanted disgrace upon the family.
The Crawleys also faced rising financial concerns, adding to the tension within the estate. As the household deals with uncertainty, the film focuses on themes of transformation, identity, and resilience.
Speaking about the film, Simon Curtis shared, “This film is a loving portrait of the characters as they enter the 1930s, and we really dig into the characters' emotions at the end of the story we're telling.”
He added, “As a director, I was thrilled to return to this ensemble. It’s the greatest collection of British actors around. And with our incredible guest stars, it truly was a dream project.”
The emotional depth of the narrative is further enhanced by Julian Fellowes’ writing, which explores the subtle dynamics between characters. Curtis reflected on these moments, saying, “Julian gives every character, regardless of class, sex, or age, dignity, wit, and warmth. I especially loved the small moments of humanity, many of which felt like farewells.”
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale aims to deliver a story rich in drama, scandal, and personal triumph, staying true to the essence of what made the franchise a global phenomenon. With Lady Mary’s divorce shaping the central conflict, the film reintroduces her as a modern, forward-thinking woman, ready to face societal expectations head-on.
