Akshay Kumar has excelled in all genres and just before the pandemic, he got a lot of love and also box office success for acting in socially-relevant films. Sadly, that genre has taken a beating in the post-pandemic era. As a result, some of his films in that space did not work. Meanwhile, his last four films – Housefull 5, Jolly LLB 3, Bhooth Bangla and Welcome To The Jungle – have succeeded. The common factor in all these films was that they featured comedy and big-screen appeal. We spoke to trade experts and asked if he should stick to such films for the time being, as that is what the day demands.
Trade analyst Atul Mohan said, “Akshay has done socially relevant films in the past. But this is the time of large-scale films. Hence, Bhooth Bangla and Welcome To The Jungle are the right films at the right time. Multi-starrers and biggies are like a Thali you enjoy in a restaurant. Getting the same Thali food as a parcel and having it at home is no fun. So, films like these will revive the theatrical business and benefit everyone in the industry.”
Girish Johar agreed, “Akshay is brilliant in comedies and audiences appreciate that more than seeing him in serious roles. Once you do serious films like Kesari Chapter 2, there’s less chance of adding music and commercially appealing songs. But in films like Welcome To The Jungle and Bhooth Bangla, that is not a challenge. It makes it easier to promote and gain wider acceptance.”
Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, explained, “If you are a commercial actor with commercial sensibility, you should do films that people want to see at the present moment. Rather than trying to force your thought process on the audience, you should listen to them. If you listen, you’ll be rewarded handsomely. Otherwise, you’ll be sidelined. The public will watch what they want to watch. You can’t dictate what kind of film they see. They are the ones investing money and time. And right now, they want to watch horror comedy, comic capers, intense love stories and action mass entertainers. So, we should serve them films accordingly. If you deliver a film like Dangal, they won’t come. They don’t have the hunger for it. After five years, they’ll hopefully crave films like Dangal again.”
Meanwhile, trade analyst Taran Adarsh remarked, “He has proven his versatility over and over again. His next film is Haiwaan (thriller). It reunites him with Priyadarshan and also Saif Ali Khan after many years. From what I’ve heard, it should be another feather in his cap as it’s a very different role.”
