In a country like India where there have been several ongoing debates over the tabooed topic of menstraul periods, R. Balki and actress-writer Twinkle Khanna decided to come together to put forth the inspiring story of Pad-man Arunachalam Muruganatham. He had decided to improvise the hygiene conditions of his villages by finding alternative and cheaper pads instead of the high end and expensive sanitary pads for women.
The encouraging story of Padma Shri Arunachalam Muruganatham was incorporated in the second book of Twinkle Khanna but it seems it wasn’t easy for this star to trace or get the rights of his story. Revealing that it took over one and a half years to put this together, Muruganatham stated that he came to know that a girl named Twinkle was chasing him and tried to contact him when he was in Malaysia and US. She finally found him in London and it was then he learnt that she was Rajesh Khanna’s daughter. That’s when he told her that a man named Akshay too is trying to get the rights of his story but to that she laughingly stated that Akshay is her husband.
Arunchalam also mentioned that it took her a while to convince him for the screen adaptation of his story. She visited his workshop and house in Coimbatore where she brought in ‘a man’ according to Muruganatham. The said ‘man’ was none other than filmmaker R. Balki which the real life pad-man realized later when his friends told him that he was the director who has directed famous stars like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Amitabh Bachchan.
Akshay Kumar, who came to the location much later, too was extremely happy about the project and Arunchalam was all praises for the actor calling him a ‘humble human being’. Talking about an instance when Akshay insisted on accompanying him for a lecture at a woman’s college, the pad-man revealed that though the actor wanted to come, Twinkle didn’t allow because she didn’t want the media to get a whiff about the project then. He was also happy that Twinkle was present at all their meetings because he believes that for obvious reasons women can relate to the problems better and he didn’t have to delve deeper about the process of making pads for menstruation.
Muruganatham also mentioned that he initially wanted Hollywood to take up his story to create a biopic on him but now he is more than happy to have Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna recreate his life on screen. He believes that everyone around will become aware of his two decade worth hard work with this film Pad-Man.
