Would the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments greenlight the proposal by the makers of the new Pawan Kaylan film OG to hike their ticket price to Rs.1000 for special shows of the eagerly awaited film?
Interestingly, Pawan Kalyan is the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra.
But is such an unscheduled hike fair to the consumer?
Producer-director-writer Vikram Bhatt said, “The consumer always has a choice whether to buy the ticket at that price or wait it out. But in my opinion, it is a double edged sword for the filmmakers. If the film is good, then you will have twice the applause but if the consumer pays that price and if the film is not up to their expectation, then twice the backlash”
Producer-director Suneel Darshan justified the hike to an extent. “I guess this must be a well-thought of strategy and announced after much mulling. To justify the decision, I’d say that when a bucket of popcorn can be marketed at Rs. 800 in the multiplex’s cafeterias, selling the movie tickets at around the same figure to selected high end audiences could be the latest experiment perhaps in the Telugu zones.”
A young successful Telugu star feels such a move, of escalating ticket prices selectively, would create an unnecessary hierarchy at the box office. “I mean, if Pawan sir’s tickets are sold at Rs 1000, then Chiranjeevi sir is within his rights to expect the consumer to pay Rs. 1,500 for tickets. Where does this end?”
