The Tamil film industry is clearly at a crossroads, grappling with issues that threaten its sustainability.

In a dramatic move aimed at addressing mounting challenges, the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) has announced a temporary halt to the commencement of new film projects from August 16, 2024, and a complete shutdown of all film-related activities from November 1, 2024. This unprecedented decision comes in response to a backlog of films in various stages of production and a spiralling increase in production costs, primarily driven by escalating artist remuneration.

According to several reports, a high-level meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Tamil Film Producers’ Association, Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, Tamil Nadu Theatre Multiplex Owners Association, and Tamil Nadu Film Distributors’ Association, was convened in Chennai to address the pressing issues plaguing the industry.

A central point of contention is the increasing instances of actors and technicians abandoning ongoing projects after receiving advance payments, leaving producers to bear significant financial losses. To curb this practice, the council has mandated that all artists and technicians must complete their commitments before embarking on new projects.

The meeting singled out actor Dhanush for particular scrutiny, following allegations by Sri Thenandal Films of receiving an advance payment without fulfilling contractual obligations. Producers have been advised to seek clearance from the Tamil Film Producers Association before initiating new projects with Dhanush.

The council has implemented a mandatory eight-week window between a film’s theatrical release and its subsequent debut on OTT platforms to bolster the theatrical business, especially for big-budget films. This move is intended to safeguard the box office performance of high-stakes productions.
