Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has been garnering global acclaim for his epic, larger-than-life films. Now, his work has been officially endorsed by two of the biggest names in Hollywood, James Cameron and Joe Russo. The Netflix documentary, Modern Masters: S.S. Rajamouli, offers a deep dive into the director's creative process and cinematic vision. In the film, Cameron and Russo openly express their admiration for Rajamouli's unique style and storytelling prowess.
James Cameron, known for his groundbreaking visual spectacles like Avatar and Titanic, has been a vocal admirer of Rajamouli's work. In the documentary, he lauds the Indian director for his ability to create "worlds that feel real, yet fantastical". Cameron also praises Rajamouli's skill in balancing grand scale with intimate character moments, stating, "As filmmakers now, we all have the same influences as we were coming up, as we were growing up, the things that impressed us. But he's (Rajamouli) made it his own in a very - I want to say, a muscular style, but I'm not referring to the strength and the physicality of the actors."
He added, "Although he celebrates that very well. But it's very...it's a style that's just got a lot of energy, a lot of dynamism...a lot of it kind of sears into your consciousness in an unforgettable way.”
Joe Russo, who along with his brother Anthony Russo, directed blockbuster hits like Avengers: Endgame and Captain America: Civil War, shares a similar sentiment. He is particularly impressed by Rajamouli's ability to blend mythology and action in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Russo observes, “I think people were blown away by RRR in Hollywood. I just think that the level of craft exhibited here is equal to any major film that comes out of Hollywood, any large-scale movie.”
