Rana Daggubati, best known for his iconic portrayal of Bhallaldeva in S. S. Rajamouli’s heralded franchise, spoke to Hindustan Times about the renewed magic surrounding their dual-part saga, now re-released in consolidated form across theatres.

Originally released separately in 2015 and 2017 respectively, the two films were merged for the revisit. According to Daggubati, this re-release serves as a potent reminder of the franchise’s enduring resonance. “I think, a film stays forever and I think, something that’s so defining as Baahubali was, for us in India… is very iconic. Everyone got to see Indian cinema one day and, the success of that film, the love that that film got kind of changed everything for all of us in the sense of knowing how big we can dream and how further a film can reach.”

He added, “The fact that it’s celebrated after a decade really means something.” Daggubati also revealed a personal highlight: Although he did not experience the Indian theatrical reaction originally, he watched the re-release in IMAX at a Chinese theatre in Los Angeles describing it as a “really, really good experience of that film.”

On the topic of future ambitions, he was unapologetically ambitious, “Every single time!” when asked if he aims to recreate that level of success again. He further elaborated, “Our aim is to get there and it’s like, ‘ok we got there once and we just have to find the ethic and the right group of people to just one more time, and I think special things happen. They just happen and you just have to consistently be there and we’re working towards getting it back again.”

In the wider context, the re-release not only underscores the franchise’s legacy but also signals how Indian cinema continues to build on films that broke ground. Rana’s reflection captures both the pride and the challenge of living up to something that once redefined possibility.
