Prithviraj Sukumaran opens up on the golden age of Malayalam Cinema; says, “We have grown in leaps and bounds – not just in terms of the numbers”

The actor is currently gearing up for the release of L2: Empuraan, which is also directed by Prithviraj himself.

Renowned actor and filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran recently expressed his admiration for the growth of Malayalam cinema, calling the past six years a "golden age" for the industry. He emphasized how the industry has made significant strides, both in terms of global theatrical releases and the quality of storytelling.

"We have grown in leaps and bounds - not just in terms of the numbers we generate or the kind of theatrical releases that have now become truly global for the industry, but also in terms of content, how it is delivered, and the kinds of films being made. I believe the last six years have truly been a golden age for Malayalam cinema. And as I said, I feel honored and privileged to mount a film that is, in many ways, an aspirational project for the industry—especially at a time when we are already making such great films. I hope this film further strengthens that image and contributes to the ongoing evolution of Malayalam cinema. More than anything, I hope it opens doors for even greater films to be made. Like I said during Lucifer, whatever this film achieves—if it goes on to become a massive success—the greatest outcome would be for it to make things easier for future films to find a bigger space and a wider release."

Building on the massive success of Lucifer, Prithviraj is currently working on its much-anticipated sequel, L2: Empuraan. The film, the second in a planned trilogy, will explore deeper layers of the story introduced in Lucifer. Mohanlal reprises his role as Khureshi Ab'raam/Stephen Nedumpally, with a stellar ensemble cast including Prithviraj himself as Zayed Masood, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, and international actors Jerome Flynn and Eriq Ebouaney. The screenplay, written by Murali Gopy, is expected to elevate the narrative to a grander scale.

Scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on March 27, 2025, L2: Empuraan will be the first Malayalam film to be released in IMAX. Prithviraj’s ambitious vision for the film reflects his commitment to pushing boundaries and contributing to the global recognition of Malayalam cinema.
