“Saddened by the passing of the noted film personality, B. Saroja Devi Ji. She will be remembered as an exemplary icon of Indian cinema and culture,” the Prime Minister wrote. “Her diverse performances left an indelible mark across generations. Her works, spanning different languages and covering diverse themes, highlighted her versatile nature. My condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

The veteran actress passed away on Monday, July 14, in Bengaluru at the age of 87 after suffering from age-related health complications.

Born on January 7, 1938, Bangalore Saroja Devi began her film career at the young age of 17 with the Kannada film Mahakavi Kalidasa (1955). Her rise was meteoric as she soon captured hearts across South India with her beauty, grace, and powerful screen presence. Her breakthrough in Tamil cinema came with the legendary film Nadodi Mannan (1958), opposite M.G. Ramachandran, which made her one of the most sought-after stars in the industry.

Saroja Devi also left a lasting impression in Telugu cinema with hits like Panduranga Mahatyam (1957), and in Hindi cinema with Paigham (1959), where she starred alongside Dilip Kumar. Her illustrious career spanned over 200 films across four languages, making her a true pan-Indian star.

Even after her marriage in 1967, Saroja Devi continued to command leading roles—a rarity in those times. She acted in Tamil films till 1974 and continued her work in Kannada and Telugu movies until the 1980s.

Her contributions were honoured with the Padma Shri in 1969, Padma Bhushan in 1992, the Kalaimamani award from Tamil Nadu, and an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University.

As the nation mourns her loss, PM Modi’s tribute reflects what millions feel—India has lost not just a beloved actress, but a cultural icon whose legacy will live on forever.
