At the recent SIIMA Awards, veteran actor Kamal Haasan made a much-anticipated announcement that he would soon reunite with Rajinikanth for an upcoming film project. The news delighted fans, many of whom have long hoped to see the two Tamil cinema legends share the screen again.
Kamal Haasan, who won an award for his performance in Kalki 2898 AD, was asked on stage whether a collaboration with Rajinikanth was in the works. In response, he confirmed that the two stars would indeed be working together on a new film. “We don’t know if it’s a tharamana sambavam (wonderful occurrence), but it’s good if the audience likes it. If they’re happy, we’ll be happy too. Otherwise, we’ll keep trying. This has been a long time coming,” Kamal said. “We were separate because they gave one biscuit to both of us. But the half biscuit made us both happy, so we’ll come together.”
Haasan also addressed the idea of rivalry between the two stars, stating that any such competition was largely created by others. “It’s the audience who imagined the competition. We never had any between us. We always wanted to produce each other’s films,” he added. “Business-wise, it might be a surprise, but for us, it feels right that it’s finally happening.”
While Kamal did not reveal specific details about the project, speculation suggests that Lokesh Kanagaraj could direct the film. The filmmaker, who previously worked with Kamal in Vikram, had mentioned in a recent promotional event for Coolie that he had cameo roles planned within the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) and would love to include Kamal due to being a long-time fan. Rajinikanth’s last release, Coolie, hit theatres last month, while Kamal was most recently seen in Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life. The film received mixed reviews and saw a modest box office performance. It is currently streaming on Netflix.
The upcoming collaboration marks a major moment in Tamil cinema, as Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth last shared screen space in iconic films such as Apoorva Raagangal, Moondru Mudichu, Avargal, and 16 Vayathinile during the early years of their careers.
