The COVID-19 lockdown accelerated the rise of OTT platforms and in a way, re-launched the careers of several actors. One of them is Bobby Deol, who is currently seeing a second life in his career. Not only the Hindi industry with web series and movies, Bobby is expanding his renaissance to the Tamil and Telugu film industries with projects like Suriya’s Kanguva and Nandamuri Balakrishna’s NBK 109.
In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Bobby Deol discussed his experience working on these pan-Indian films, highlighting how the landscape of Indian cinema has evolved. “Everyone wants to make a great project, and that is the common goal,” Bobby shared. “Being on the sets in Chennai or Hyderabad or Mumbai doesn’t make much of a difference now.”
Bobby revealed that he had signed on for Kanguva even before the release of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, which stars Ranbir Kapoor. Expressing his admiration for his co-star Suriya, Bobby said, “I always wanted to work with Suriya. He is a great actor, and I was excited about being offered Kanguva.”
Despite not being familiar with the Tamil film industry, Bobby was impressed by director Siva, whom he described as “a great filmmaker, and such a gentle soul. He is like a teddy bear, and he has gone on to make such a great film.”
Bobby also delved into the process of transforming into Udhiran, the primary antagonist in Kanguva. The role required significant physical preparation, including wearing a hairpiece, applying scars, and using custom-made contact lenses. “We had to shoot in dust and smoke,” Bobby recalled. “Many think filmmaking is an easy process, but it is clearly something else altogether. You have to go through the heat, storm fans, dust, etc… but it is so much fun because it satisfies you creatively.”
Studio Green has signed up with top distribution houses to release the film on a massive scale across the globe on October 10, 2024.
