Veteran South Korean actor Lee Soon-jae passed away at the age of 91, marking the end of an extraordinary career that helped shape the country’s television, theatre, and film industry.

Lee was born in 1934 in Hoeryong (now part of North Korea) and later moved to Seoul before the Korean War. His acting journey began while he was a student at Seoul National University, leading to his debut on stage in 1956 with the play Beyond the Horizon. In a career spanning six decades, Lee Soon-jae appeared in around 140 notable dramas. He was widely loved for his role in the sitcom High Kick Through the Roof and delivered powerful performances in historical dramas like The King’s Face. One of his most recent and acclaimed roles was in Navillera, where he portrayed an elderly man chasing a long-postponed dream. His other memorable works include Dear My Friends, Sejong, Father’s House, and The Great King.
Lee Soon-jae is widely regarded as a member of the first generation of Korean television actors. He successfully bridged the early experimental era of Korean TV in the 1960s with today’s global K-drama popularity.
