James Corden recently shared the surprising story of how he landed his role in the upcoming The Smurfs movie. Speaking about the unexpected offer, Corden revealed that it all began with a voice note from none other than Rihanna.
"I got a voice note from Rihanna on my phone, which had never happened to me before or since. She said, would you come and be in this Smurf movie? Would I? I was so blown away. And that is the whole story of how I came to play No Name," Corden said.
In the 2025 film, Corden lends his voice to No Name, a key character who becomes Smurfette's closest friend and emotional support. Director Chris Miller described No Name as the heart and soul of the story. Corden further explained, “In the Smurf world, he is completely lost. For him, the film is about his quest to discover his purpose. Smurfette is his ally and confidante, the person that tells him that he is going to be okay. She gives him some tough love at points. And she’s also a brilliant singer, because…it’s Rihanna.”
The film not only features Corden in a significant role but also showcases Rihanna as Smurfette. Sharing his experience of working with her in the studio, Corden humorously admitted, “When I was in the studio with Rihanna and her producers, it was hard not to feel like somebody made a huge mistake.”
Reflecting on joining such an iconic franchise, Corden said, “I reckon wherever you are in the world, you could show a picture of a Smurf to people and more than half of them would recognize it. It’s a phenomenon that has lasted an incredibly long time and retained its relevance. I’m very honored to be part of it.”
The Smurfs will release in India on July 18, 2025, in both English and Hindi, distributed by Paramount Pictures India. Fans of the franchise and the star-studded cast can look forward to this animated adventure soon.
