Hollywood legend Hugo Weaving, celebrated for his iconic roles in The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings, has lent his commanding voice to launch the first-ever trailer of Maya— an ambitious science-fiction fantasy universe by filmmaker Anand Gandhi (Ship of Theseus, Tumbbad) and award-winning game designer Zain Memon (SHASN, AZADI).

Hugo Weaving unveils first trailer for Maya, a groundbreaking mythology by Anand Gandhi and Zain Memon
The teaser, narrated by Weaving, opens with a powerful line: “For those who control the bard, control everything.”
The trailer introduces audiences to the philosophical and epic scope of Maya — “the story we didn’t know we were already living.”
A New Universe for the Hyperconnected Age
Maya is set on planet Neh, where a network of sentient trees known as Maya functions as the living internet. Citizens “tether” daily into shared dreamscapes, while immortal Divyas harvest data to predict billions of possible futures. Everyone is tracked and nudged — except one person, whose freedom threatens the entire system.
“Maya is the project we’ve always dreamt of making,” said Gandhi. “It brings together our love for ancient myths, their philosophical depth, high-fantasy magic systems, and hard science-fiction that pushes the boundaries of known science.”
Co-creator Zain Memon added, “We began by creating a new world from scratch — enlisting geologists, biologists, linguists, architects, and artists from around the world.” Developed over four years, the Maya universe will unfold through films, games, novels, graphic novels, and immersive experiences, with the first release being Maya: Book One, launching soon on Kickstarter.
A Global Debut Across Two Continents
The trailer drop coincides with Maya's global showcase at Worldcon 2025 in Seattle (August 13–17), the world’s largest and most influential science fiction convention, where Gandhi is presenting the project to an international audience of genre enthusiasts.
Simultaneously, Maya opens The Independence Project at IFBE Mumbai (August 14–17). The multi-day exhibition immerses visitors into the Maya universe through stunning concept art, speculative architecture by CEPT University students under architect Shikha Parmar, and innovative environment designs by Vinu Daniel. The event also features discussions with Sameep Padora, Vinu Daniel, Shikha Parmar, and Zain Memon.
