Marvel Studios' highly anticipated series Ironheart is all set to stream exclusively on JioHotstar from June 25, available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The series promises to introduce a bold new era of armoured heroism through the story of Riri Williams, brought to life by actress Dominique Thorne.
Ironheart stands out not just for its storytelling but also for its impressive commitment to practical effects, particularly in creating Riri’s iconic Ironheart suits. Unlike many modern productions that rely heavily on CGI, the team behind Ironheart prioritized building tangible suits and shooting with real sets and locations.
Special Effects Supervisor Dan Sudick, a 13-time Academy Award nominee, led this ambitious effort. Explaining the suit-building process, Sudick said, “Once we get the artwork from the Marvel Studios visual development team, we ingest it into our computer development team led by Peter Carney. He sets the artwork up in such a way so that we can then produce a 3D model. We then take that 3D model and distribute it amongst our team and they break that model down into individual pieces, which are either tool pathed and machined in house, or they’re sent out to be 3D printed. Once we receive all those parts back our paint department paints and applies a finish to them and we assemble the suit.”
Sudick further emphasized the practical functionality, “One of the key elements in building the suits is engineering them in such a way that we can easily break them apart to transport them to set or use for a shot when they only see the top half of the suit.”
The Model IV suit holds special meaning within the Marvel legacy. “The Model IV was very interesting to make because Riri goes to the junkyard to get the parts to rebuild it, so there is some connective tissue there to Tony Stark building the Mark I in the cave with the missile parts and scraps,” Sudick explained.
The Model V suit, despite appearing more streamlined, posed greater challenges. Peter Carney, Special Effects Design Technician, noted, “The Model IV was definitely challenging because there’s so much detail in it, but I would say that the Model V suit turned out to be much harder in its execution... The Model V had to be executed at such a high quality because the camera sees every imperfection—it took more time to finesse the build to get it perfect.”
Dominique Thorne shared her perspective on wearing the suits, “What I appreciate most about the suits is how much space they take up. I really loved how big they were. I love that Riri, as played by myself, is a cool five feet tall—but in the suit, she’s towering over everybody at six feet. I think the suits are this very literal, physical representation of the badass that she is and I appreciate how the bulk of it never really goes away. I think it’s refined—she doesn’t trim it down for anything or anyone.”
With Ironheart, Marvel Studios continues to blend powerful storytelling with detailed craftsmanship. The series will premiere exclusively on JioHotstar starting June 25 in multiple languages.
