America Ferrera opens up on her experience of working in Barbie; says, “I found myself invested in the story and all the characters, especially Gloria”

Greta Gerwig, the Oscar-nominated writer and director of Little Women and Lady Bird, is bringing her unique vision to the world of Barbie with the upcoming film Barbie. The film stars Oscar-nominated actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, respectively.

In the upcoming film Barbie, the titular character is forced to question everything she knows about herself and the world she lives in when she is kicked out of Barbie Land and sent to the real world. There, she must learn to live as a normal person and discover the true meaning of friendship, love, and herself.

Talking about her experience in the film, America Ferrera (who plays Gloria) said, “Gloria is the ‘every woman.’ At work she’s low on the totem pole. She has longtime dreams of climbing up the ladder and influencing the brand she works on. I didn’t grow up playing with Barbies or think that I had any relationship to Barbie, but we all do, because she’s such a part of our culture. When the script came to me, I trusted that Greta and Margot would have a perspective; by the time I finished reading it, I was a Barbie Girl. I remember laughing and crying at the same time, there was so much humanity in the story and so much generosity of spirit for all the characters. It was irresistible and I found myself invested in the story and all the characters, especially Gloria.”

The film is directed by Greta Gerwig and co-written by her and Noah Baumbach. Margot Robbie stars as Barbie and also produces the film. The star-studded cast also includes Ryan Gosling as Ken, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, and Helen Mirren.

Also starring America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae and Will Ferrell, Barbie is set to release in India on July 21.
