Shah Rukh Khan is on a record-breaking spree and yet, some of his achievements don’t fail to surprise. That the superstar delivered two all-time grossers with Pathaan and Jawan is common knowledge. However, it has now come to light that he is all set to get into the overseas 100 million USD club. Pathaan collected 47.8 million USD while Jawan’s collections, as of now, are 43.90 million USD. Moreover, Shah Rukh Khan clocked Rs. 2,141 crores worldwide in 2023 as Jawan and Pathaan collected Rs. 1090.89 crores (and counting) and Rs. 10.50.30 crores respectively. And that’s not all. He still has one more release this year, Dunki, which also seems like another blockbuster.
Hence, is it fair to say that Shah Rukh Khan’s 2023 record will stay forever? After all, an actor would have to similarly release two or three all-time blockbusters in a year or deliver one film that will do unprecedented business across the world.
We asked this question to the trade. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “Never say never. Having said that, this is a huge tall figure for anyone to conquer. It’ll definitely be a lofty number for actually to even think about crossing it. But you never know with time how people react to a particular star and a film.” He also added, “Shah Rukh Khan is in a very enviable position.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan opined, “To deliver 3 Rs. 500 crore grossers or three blockbusters in a year will be an impossible task. An actor might deliver two blockbusters but 3 is unimaginable.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, believed that the other actors in our industry might not be capable of this feat, “I don’t think Aamir Khan will be able to achieve since he works in 1 film a year. Salman Khan, at best, can do 2 films. Maybe in 2025 or 2026, if his craze is intact, he has a chance. From the younger lot, Ranbir Kapoor can score but the kind of films that he’s doing, if he plans it in such a manner, then maybe he can achieve. Nevertheless, for a couple of years, this record is here to stay.”
He continued, “It was a well-calculated and well-planned move to the T. He could have put his foot down and released Jawan in 2024. But he planned it meticulously. With Pathaan, he used the Yash Raj might and proved that he was the box office king. With Jawan, he tried to penetrate the Southern markets. He managed to do record business of Rs. 60 crores which is double than the previous highest grosser, which is also Pathaan.”
Atul Mohan said, “He had said that he’s the last of the superstars. Nowadays, an actor delivers a hit and is over the moon. You have to be very consistent. Stars like Shah Rukh have been working for 30 years. They know what works with the audience. Hits and misses are part and parcel of their lives.”
He further said, “Shah Rukh’s biggest grosser before Pathaan was Chennai Express (2013), which collected around Rs. 200 crores. His films did not work after that. It was a do-or-die situation for him when he made a comeback. And he jumped from the Rs. 200 crore club to Rs. 500 crore club, that too twice.”
Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, however, disagreed, “I don’t think it’ll stay forever. It’s just the beginning of such records. It’ll take some time because there are very few stars who’ll release 3 films in a year. But I do foresee very big business happening for Hindi films.” He also made an interesting, “Dunki will not be counted as a complete 2023 release as some part of its collections will be collected in 2024.”
Raj Bansal added, “When Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion (2017) collected Rs. 500 crores, many felt that yeh record koi nahin tod paayega. Lekin record toot gaya. The same happened when Pathaan broke Baahubali’s record. However, the same year, Gadar 2 crossed its collections and then Jawan took over Gadar 2.”
Historic buzz for Dunki
Needless to say, the hype for Dunki is unprecedented. Taran Adarsh stated, “I am very confident about Dunki. Both Pathaan and Jawan are in a league of their own. As for Rajkumar Hirani, he’s the ultimate filmmaker that we have today. Irrespective of the star cast, people want to watch his films. And yahaan par toh Shah Rukh Khan hai. Hence, it’s sone pe suhaga.”
Atul Mohan is sure Dunki will break records too, “We all know that the business of Rajkumar Hirani’s films has been more than his previous films.”
Raj Bansal agreed, “I have always maintained that the next release gets affected by the performance of the previous film. Jawan and Pathaan’s performances will help Dunki.”
Girish Johar noted, “Dunki will be huge both in India and Overseas. That’s the reason he’s coming during an overseas-friendly period also. Hence, it’s a smartly strategized decision.”
