Bollywood star Aamir Khan is preparing to return to theatres with Sitaare Zameen Par following the disappointing performance of Laal Singh Chaddha. However, his slow reaction to Operation Sindoor has sparked calls for a boycott. In a recent interview with ABP, Suniel Shetty came to Aamir’s defence, highlighting how Bollywood has increasingly become an easy scapegoat.
When asked if Bollywood actors should voice their opinions on socio-political matters, Suniel responded, “Hamesha Bollywood ke peeche pade rehte hai. Bollywood doesn't come forward in this. If it’s about the country, politicians will speak; if it's in the nation’s interest, we will definitely support it — that’s why we even make such films. We are trying to do our job. Speaking about my industry, I can say there are more India-centric individuals here than anywhere else in the world.”
Aamir Khan’s movie Sitaare Zameen Par faced calls for a boycott after he delayed congratulating the ‘heroes of Operation Sindoor,’ with his message coming out on the same day as the film’s trailer release. The controversy intensified when an old photo reappeared online, showing Aamir shaking hands with the Turkish president during his 2017 visit to Turkey.
Responding to the boycott calls, Suniel said, “People should forget the past. The past does not represent today’s time. Turkey’s situation then and now is very different. So, what we do going forward should be our own decision, rather than judging based on the past. When you go to big social gatherings, you don’t always know who you’re posing for pictures with. In today’s time, if you don’t pose, you’re called ‘rude’, and if you do so unknowingly, you still become a target.”
The movie serves as a spiritual sequel to Aamir’s critically praised Taare Zameen Par. It features Genelia D’Souza in the lead role, alongside 10 debutant actors. Adapted from the Spanish film Champions, the story centres on Aamir playing a basketball coach who, as part of a court-mandated punishment, trains a team of neurodivergent children. The film is set to hit theatres on June 20.
Suniel’s newest movie, Kesari Veer, has released in theatres today (May 23). Directed by Prince Dhiman, this historical action film also stars Vivek Oberoi, Sooraj Pancholi, and Akanksha Sharma in leading roles. Suniel’s upcoming project is Welcome to the Jungle, which boasts a star-studded cast including Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Disha Patani, Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, and more.
