Actor Sayani Gupta has achieved a significant milestone as her directorial debut, Aasmani, has been selected for screening at the Indie Meme Film Festival (IMFF) 2026. The festival, scheduled to be held from April 22 to 26 at the AFS Cinema in Austin, Texas, is known for showcasing notable works from South Asian independent cinema.
Aasmani will be presented as part of the ‘Family Shorts Block’ on April 26, a curated segment focusing on narratives explored through children’s perspectives. The category highlights themes such as love, loss, fear, and intergenerational relationships, offering audiences an emotionally resonant viewing experience.
Expressing her response to the selection, Gupta stated, “It is an honour to present Aasmani at an international platform like IMFF. The film is deeply personal, yet it speaks to universal emotions that connect across cultures.” She further noted that being included in the Family Shorts segment makes the experience particularly meaningful, as it encourages collective viewing and reflection.
The short film follows the story of Smita, a woman in her late sixties, and her emotional attachment to a vintage powder-blue Fiat, also named Aasmani. Her relationship with the car unfolds alongside her bond with her young granddaughter, Tiya, creating a narrative centred on memory and companionship. The film features veteran actor Revathy in the lead role, supported by Daria Bedi and Abhay Kaul.
The Indie Meme Film Festival, established in 2013, has built a reputation for promoting diverse storytelling from South Asia to global audiences through screenings and interactive sessions. The selection of Aasmani underscores Gupta’s growing presence as a filmmaker. She is also set to appear in her upcoming series Glory, which will be released on Netflix.
