After a hiatus of seven years, Bollywood director Sajid Khan is reportedly preparing to return to the director’s chair to launch Govinda’s son, Yashvardhan Ahuja, in his Bollywood debut. The project, believed to be a romantic comedy, is currently in talks with Zee Studios.
The comeback comes in the wake of the #MeToo allegations that targeted Sajid in 2018 and the subsequent one-year ban imposed by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees, which ended in 2019. Despite the controversial past, trade insiders say that Khan continues to have strong backing from segments of the industry.
As per sources, the untitled film is planned as a “launchpad” for Yashvardhan Ahuja, with Nitanshi Goel (of Laapataa Ladies fame) and Krithi Shetty tapped as the female leads.
An insider told Mid-Day, “Sajid has been approached by the studio, but he hasn’t said yes yet. The studio heads are keen to have him helm the film as the comedy elements are right up his alley. Yashvardhan has another project with Phantom Studios, but he is likely to start shooting for this first. Sajid was earlier to direct a film with John Abraham, but that didn’t work out.”
Talks also hint that the rom-com might be a remake of a hit South Indian film. As of now, neither Sajid Khan nor Zee Studios have provided official confirmation, and both remained unreachable for comment at the time of reporting.
Sajid Khan’s last notable public appearance was on Bigg Boss 16 in 2022. His presence on that show drew criticism, including a letter by Swati Maliwal, then head of the Delhi Commission for Women, demanding his removal on grounds that his participation would allow “the alleged sexual predator an undue platform.”
As the film is in the early discussion stage, much remains uncertain: whether Khan will accept the offer, the timeline of shooting, and whether the film can help facilitate Yashvardhan’s entry into Bollywood. But the news of a possible comeback has already reignited curiosity and speculation in the industry.
