In a heart-warming post on social media, former actress Saira Banu shared two throwback pictures of Dilip Kumar, also featuring Dharmendra. In the lengthy caption, Banu wrote about the deep friendship between the two actors, which began when Dharmendra was a young man just starting out in Bollywood.

Banu wrote that Dharmendra had been so inspired by Kumar's acting in the film Shaheed that he had travelled from his hometown of Ludhiana, Punjab, to Bombay to meet him in person. When Dharmendra arrived at Kumar's house, he found him asleep on a sofa. Dharmendra stood there admiring his idol for a moment before Kumar woke up and called for his staff. Dharmendra quickly bolted downstairs, too shy to introduce himself.

Six years later, Dharmendra returned to Bombay for Filmfare's Talent Contest and sought an appointment to meet Kumar through his sister Farida, who was at Femina. This time, Kumar was happy to meet Dharmendra and they quickly struck up a friendship. Saira Banu said that Dilip Kumar spoke to Dharmendra like an elder brother, full of love and adoration. He even gave Dharmendra a sweater to wear on his way home, as it was a chilly night.

From that day on, Dharmendra became a regular visitor at Kumar's house. He would often drop by unannounced, day or night, and Kumar would always welcome him with open arms. Kumar became a mentor to Dharmendra, helping him to navigate the challenges of stardom and success. He was always there for Dharmendra, offering advice and support.

One night, Dharmendra visited Kumar just before the mahurat launch of his son Sunny's film Betaab. Dharmendra was nervous about the film and he wanted to share his concerns with Kumar. Kumar listened patiently to Dharmendra and then encouraged him to go for it. He told Dharmendra that he had faith in him and that he was sure the film would be a success.
