Veteran Indian actor Anupam Kher is currently in Cannes Film Festival 2025 for the premiere of his directorial debut, Tanvi The Great. While attending the film festival, he had a heartwarming reunion with Hollywood legend Robert De Niro. The two actors, who worked together in the 2012 film Silver Linings Playbook, met again on the red carpet, and their bond was visible.
De Niro, who was honoured with the Palme d’Or for Lifetime Achievement at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, greeted Kher with a warm hug and even planted a sweet kiss on his cheek. Kher later shared a video of the moment on social media and wrote an emotional note about their friendship. He called it one of the “biggest blessings” of his life.
“It was the most amazing feeling to meet my friend Robert De Niro, his graceful wife Tiffany, and their beautiful daughter Jia in Cannes! Their love and affection touched me deeply,” Kher shared. In the video, he is seen expressing his happiness and saying that even though they don’t meet often, their bond remains strong. “Some friendships are like a pause button on a tape recorder. You just hit pause and pick up right where you left off,” Kher added.

De Niro, 81, smiled warmly and returned Kher’s love with a cheerful kiss. Kher also shared that he told De Niro about the world premiere of Tanvi The Great, and introduced him to actress Shubhangi (who plays Tanvi) and the film’s crew. He even showed De Niro the film’s first poster, which the actor appreciated.
“Thank you, dearest Mr. De Niro, for your love, warmth, that wonderful hug, the delicious lunch, and your infectious brilliance over the years!” Kher wrote.
Tanvi The Great is set to premiere on May 17 in the Marche du Film section at Cannes. The film stars Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Karan Tacker, and Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen.
