Rajkumar Hirani touched by getting messages from real-life dunkers, “Most of these people leave homes eventually to come back” : Bollywood News

Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki told the story of a group of people taking the illegal donkey route, which is often referred to as ‘Dunki’, to migrate from India to England in order to have a better standard of living. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu in lead roles, the movie also told the story of the bunch of individuals wanting to return to their homeland. The filmmaker has said that he has been receiving messages from people who took the Dunki route in real life and how the film resonated with them.

Rajkumar Hirani touched by getting messages from real-life dunkers, “Most of these people leave homes eventually to come back”

Hirani said in a statement, “I have received /been receiving messages from individuals who have undertaken Dunki trips – the perilous and often illegal attempts at immigration depicted in the film. People who have been on such Dunki trips have sent very moving messages saying, ‘This is our story… we are missing home.’ So, while making Dunki, I was touched by it – messages from real-life Dunkis.”

Speaking about the aspect of returning back home, Hirani added, “Dunki is a very unique story that sheds light on a very important subject that has never been brought to the big screen in such a manner that resonated with the real-life dunkers. Most of these people leave their homes eventually to come back, nobody leaves a home thinking that (they) will permanently settle there. They are like, ‘We will go there, make money, and come back and retire in my own country’ but most don’t. So, for me, home is a great emotion and that was more inspiring while making Dunki.”

Produced by SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Rajkumar Hirani Films, Dunki was released in theatres on December 21, 2023.
