From age 20 to about 31 or 32, I told myself, ‘Hey, I love biology and math and all these things, but I wanna be the person who’s advancing software faster than anyone else.’ And so I really did narrow my focus, and I didn’t take much time off. I could stay in the office for 72 hours and then crash, and so my adrenaline was really unique.”

But what truly defined his 20s was his obsessive drive. Bill Gates admitted, “You know, I look back, and I have learned a lot since then, but just my stamina and my focus for that period of my life—being kind of a maniac—was the right thing. My competitors would say, Oh no, you work too hard,’ and I’d say, ‘Yes, I do.’

As someone in his 20s who embodies the hustle mindset, Raj Shamani wanted to know if this intense approach was the ultimate key to success.

He asked Gates, “Do you think that’s great advice for every young person watching? Should they be a maniac in their 20s?”

Bill Gates acknowledged that this level of intensity isn’t for everyone, but for those who want to get ahead, there’s no better time. “It’s not for everyone, but if you are in a race and you know moving a little bit faster can make a difference, then yes, your 20s—when you have no wife and no children—that’s the time to do it.”
