Payal Kapadia speaks on writing magic realism in All We Imagine As Light: “I still haven’t gotten over three-act structure problems” : Bollywood News

All We Imagine as Light, directed by Payal Kapadia, is making waves globally, with a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and historic Golden Globe nominations for Best Director – Motion Picture, making Payal the first-ever Indian woman nominated in this category. The film also won Best Film Not in the English Language from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

Payal Kapadia speaks on writing magic realism in All We Imagine As Light: “I still haven’t gotten over three-act structure problems”

Exploring themes of individuality, female friendships, and struggles against the male gaze and patriarchy, the film is a powerful reflection of contemporary Indian cinema. Still running strong in theaters across India, it continues to resonate deeply with audiences, from Mumbai to Goa, and uninterrupted in Karnataka and Kerala, proving its universal appeal.

This film is an official Indo-French co-production between Petit Chaos from France and Chalk & Cheese and Another Birth from India. The film is being distributed in India by Spirit Media. With a stellar cast featuring actresses Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, the film has been making waves across the globe.

While discussing the film Payal Kapadia, revealed what scene from All We Imagine As Light she found particularly daunting when she cracked it. She said, “There’s a scene toward the end that is kind of magic realism — going from a realistic documentary kind of film to something that becomes almost dreamlike. It was an important one because I wrote it first. I write random scenes that have nothing to do with each other and then try to connect the dots. I still haven’t gotten over the three-act structure problems that I have. But connecting the dots I enjoy very much. It’s a story about a woman who’s in an arranged marriage with a guy who’s vanished from her life. That relationship is seen as acceptable by society, but she really looks down on her roommate who’s having an affair with a poor person who the society would never accept because of their difference in identity and religion. For me, this disappearing husband didn’t have to come back to tell her anything; she just needed to purge this morality out of her life and see the light in a world that was all dark for her. That’s where the title comes from.”
