Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the nation in mourning the death of veteran actor Dharmendra, who passed away on November 24 at his Mumbai residence at the age of 89. The actor died days after being discharged from Breach Candy Hospital, where he was admitted in late October due to breathlessness. He would have turned 90 on December 8.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, PM Modi said, “The passing of Dharmendra Ji marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people. Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti.”

Dharmendra, often called the He-Man of Indian cinema, leaves behind a towering legacy across genres—from emotional dramas and lighthearted romances to some of Bollywood’s biggest action films. Tributes from across the industry reflect the depth of his influence and the affection he inspired both on-screen and off it.

Akshay Kumar remembered him as “the hero every boy wanted to be,” while Ajay Devgn called him “a legend who shaped the soul of Indian cinema.” Filmmaker Subhash Ghai described him as “one of the most genuine human beings in Indian cinema,” and Karan Johar wrote that his passing leaves “a gaping hole in the industry.”

Dharmendra was last seen in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. Just hours before the news of his death became public, Maddock Films released his character poster from their upcoming film Ikkis, marking one final glimpse of an icon whose contribution to cinema spans more than six decades.
