Every few months, Bollywood receives another reminder that audiences don't walk into theatres carrying calculators. They don't ask how much a film cost before buying a ticket. They ask a much simpler question: Will this entertain me?

The encouraging performance of Haunted: Echoes Of The Past 3D has once again reinforced that reality. Competing alongside films with bigger stars and greater visibility, the horror thriller has managed to attract audiences through a genre that continues to punch well above its financial weight.
And perhaps that's the biggest takeaway for Bollywood.
For years, there has been a perception that bigger budgets automatically translate into bigger theatrical success. Lavish sets, expensive action sequences and globe-trotting schedules certainly create scale, but they don't necessarily create excitement. Audiences have repeatedly shown that spectacle without engagement only goes so far.
On the other hand, horror has quietly become one of the industry's most dependable genres.
Whether it's because of jump scares, communal viewing or the sheer fun of experiencing fear inside a packed cinema hall, horror consistently delivers an experience that audiences feel is worth leaving their homes for. That's something streaming platforms still struggle to replicate.
Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh pointed out that horror has been one of the favourite genres for the audience for ages. “Horror films succeeding is not a new thing,” he said. “In the 70s, there was a film Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche, made by FU Ramsay’s seven sons, who later came to be known as Ramsay Brothers. That was a turning point. From there, a lot of films were made, and they were big hits. Then there were Ram Gopal Varma’s films, Vikram Bhatt’s films and now there are horror comedies. So, horror as a genre, you can’t rule out. Even as kids, we would hear stories about ghosts, supernatural stuff or darkness. Sometimes we believe in them, sometimes we don’t. Even if you look at the international scene, they have been making those kinds of films. The latest example is Obsession. This is a universally accepted genre.”
He added, “I know this for a fact because my father (BK Adarsh) was a distributor of those films and they were money spinners. There were times when my father would distribute big films with big stars, and they used to tank, but these films were always assured of an audience.”

Talking about the success of Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past, Adarsh said that there is a large chunk of audience that we have been ignoring. “If you look at Haunted, it had released alongside a lot of films, including Main Vaapas Aaunga, Governor and Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata,” he said. “There were other holdover titles also. It still stood out despite not getting proper shows at national chains. The shows only increased gradually when the collections started pouring in. There is no star power here and the promotions have been very minimal. We forget that there is a huge audience out there beyond the metros, which likes to watch these kind of films. There is a huge audience that we have forgotten, or we have been ignoring them. As long as stories continue to surprise, shock, and engage viewers, horror will remain one of cinema’s most enduring, dependable, and profitable genres.”
What's particularly interesting is that horror doesn't always require astronomical budgets to succeed. Atmosphere, tension, sound design, clever writing and effective performances often matter far more than expensive visual effects.
This isn't to suggest that every small budget film will become a success. Plenty don't. But the success stories remind the industry that audience interest isn't directly proportional to production cost.
In fact, some of Bollywood's most profitable films in recent years have emerged from modestly budgeted projects that understood exactly what they wanted to offer viewers.
Theatrical cinema has changed significantly after the pandemic. People are becoming increasingly selective about which films deserve a cinema visit. The promise of an engaging experience has become far more important than the size of the production itself.
That's precisely why genres like horror continue to thrive. They provide a clear theatrical proposition.
The success of films like Haunted: Echoes Of The Past 3D should encourage producers to invest in stronger concepts rather than simply larger budgets. Well-crafted thrillers, mysteries, horror films and high-concept entertainers can often generate excitement that money alone cannot buy.
Ultimately, audiences aren't rewarding budgets. They're rewarding anticipation and curiosity. Most importantly, they're rewarding entertainment.
For Bollywood, that's perhaps the healthiest reminder of all.
