Director Nikkhil Advani, in a chat with Lehren Retro, revealed that former R&AW chief A.S. Dulat was taken aback when he read the script of D-Day . The retired intelligence officer was stunned because the script closely resembled an actual operation R&AW had considered but never executed. When Dulat asked Advani how he obtained such details, the filmmaker simply responded, “Google. It was there. Everything is there. Dark web.”

D-Day’s Story Mirrored a Real Intelligence Plan
At the time of D-Day’s development, A.S. Dulat had recently retired from R&AW. During a discussion with Advani, he expressed disbelief at how accurately the film depicted an attempted strategy to capture Dawood. According to Dulat, the method shown in the movie—smuggling the fugitive across borders in the trunk of a car—was the only viable way to bring him back undetected. “Everywhere else is being monitored, this is the only way you can get him,” Dulat reportedly said.
Rishi Kapoor’s Casting and Irrfan’s Prediction
In D-Day, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor played Goldman, a character based on Dawood Ibrahim. Initially, Advani had approached him for a different role, but Kapoor later auditioned for Goldman and proved to be a perfect fit. When Advani informed Irrfan Khan about Kapoor’s casting, the late actor confidently predicted, “It’s over for all of us. He’s going to take the full film.” His prediction turned out to be accurate, as Kapoor’s performance was widely praised.
