At the trailer launch of Netflix’s upcoming film Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins, actor Kunal Kapoor spoke about stepping outside his comfort zone to play a hardened law enforcement officer. Known for portraying thoughtful, composed characters, Kapoor shared that he had been looking for a role that would allow him to take on something different.

“I was actively seeking a project like this,” Kapoor said and continued, “I've never been part of a heist film before, the kind of film that's a rollercoaster ride with surprises at every turn. But it's important that it's done by people that understand the genre. When this opportunity came with such an exceptional team, I couldn't pass it up.”

The actor admitted that most of his past roles have leaned towards more cerebral characters, and now, he expressed excitement about the chance to embody a tougher persona on screen. “I'm cast as the mediator, the peacemaker, the poet, or the philosopher,” Kapoor noted. “Typically, the kind of roles I'm offered, my character would be the one saying, 'Let's talk this out and find a compromise. Let's divide the diamond into four parts and move on.' This role offered something completely different - a chance to wield a gun and badge, and slam a few people. It was liberating to not be the voice of reason,” he added.

Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins is a crime thriller that follows the hunt for a legendary diamond known as "The African Red Sun." Saif Ali Khan plays a slick con artist hired by a powerful crime lord, portrayed by Jaideep Ahlawat, to carry out a high-stakes heist. Kapoor’s character, a relentless police officer, brings added tension to the narrative as he pursues the masterminds behind the theft. The film also features Nikita Dutta in a key role and is co-directed by Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal. With an ensemble cast and a plot filled with twists, Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on April 25.
