Konkona Sen Sharma highlights urgent need for women’s safety on film sets; says, “There are so many men who have such predatory behaviour”

Konkona Sen Sharma, celebrated for her nuanced performances and socially conscious storytelling, has returned to the screen as ACP Sanyukta Roy in the web series Search: The Naina Murder Case. Directed by Rohan Sippy, the series premiered on JioHotstar on October 10 and has already attracted attention for its gripping narrative and Konkona’s compelling portrayal. In an exclusive chat with Zoom, she spoke about the show as well as broader issues concerning women in the industry.

Discussing women’s safety on film sets, Konkona reflected on the changes over the past two decades. She observed, “20 years ago there were far fewer women on set and and and now there are more and they are all often for practical things. For example, if you want more women on set, you have to have better bathrooms. Many young women don't go to school because they don't have access to good bathrooms. Or because our travel is such that you do need like proper pickup and drop in the middle of the night and things like that and safety.”

The actress also addressed the troubling behaviour some women face, saying, “You have to look out for these things. There are so many men who have such predatory behaviour. How do you deal with that? We're still learning but it's only through conversations I guess that we can start marginally making a difference.” Her candid remarks underline the ongoing need for safer and more equitable work environments for women in film.

In Search: The Naina Murder Case, Konkona plays ACP Sanyukta Roy, a sharp and determined investigator navigating the complexities of a high-profile murder case alongside her crumbling marriage. The plot centres on the brutal killing of a teenage girl, Naina, which exposes political intrigue and corruption in the city. The series also features Abhishek Bhalerao, Shraddha Das, and Shiv Panditt in significant roles.

With its dark, suspenseful tone and strong female lead, the show not only delivers an engaging mystery but also sparks conversations about the challenges women face in male-dominated spaces, both on-screen and behind the camera.
