As the world prepares to welcome another new year, filmmaker Karan Johar chose introspection over celebration. Taking to Instagram, the director-producer shared a series of thought-provoking statements that quickly caught the attention of social media users, prompting reflection on grace, kindness and personal accountability in today’s fast-paced digital age.

Opening his post with a striking question, Johar wrote, “Grace... Is this now an alien phenomena? Have we as a race completely lost our ability to be good old fashioned graceful?” Setting the tone for what followed, his message delved into how everyday interactions—both online and offline—have increasingly lost warmth and empathy.
Highlighting modern communication habits, Johar questioned, “Have we lost the grace to reply to messages and emails... Or if we do reply then can we not reply in monosyllables? Use a or have a Are we not able to celebrate other people's successes and can we stop celebrating their failures? Can we praise whole heartedly and can we criticise without bias, anger and rage... Can we stop making social media a dumping ground of our own failings, shortcomings or inner darkness...” The lines resonated strongly with netizens, many of whom echoed similar frustrations in the comments.
The filmmaker further emphasised kindness and self-awareness, adding, “Can we go back to just being kind at all times and not taking our own rotten mood out of the house? Are we able to practise what we preach... gyaan givers need to also be gyaan executors...” His words served as a reminder of the gap that often exists between advice and action.
Addressing judgmental attitudes, Johar didn’t mince his words. “Are we able to reduce our judgemental levels? You are not the moral police... look within and you will have to deal with your own questionable morality,” he wrote, urging introspection rather than moral grandstanding.
Concluding on a personal note, Johar encouraged authenticity. “Lastly, do you have the grace to be YOU! With your flaws, rough edges and indecisions... be YOU and acknowledge YOU for who YOU are!” he stated, before signing off with a poignant line: “Let's not bury grace... let's revive her from the ventilator she's been on for decades...happy 2026.” He captioned the post simply as, “Happy 2026!!”

Johar’s message struck a powerful chord, with many praising the filmmaker for articulating sentiments that feel increasingly relevant in an age dominated by instant opinions and online outrage. As 2026 approaches, his words stand as a timely reminder that grace, empathy and self-reflection may be the most meaningful resolutions of all.
